I know not me, I'm not contemplating overseas studies at all. Local's good enough.

Anyway, there's some inconsistencies with the dates and stuff. Today Straits Times did a Special Report about US Scholarship fair which is happening (or rather, has happened) today at Suntec. The one the school gave us the brochure for is happening next weekend, Sunday, at Suntec. Hope it's 2 different things, and there's no confusion.

Anyone interested can still jio me go see see look look cause I remember last time I went with my friends, then my friend (girl) saw this tall quite handsome angmoh promoting his university or something, and the angmoh was going on and on about the standard of living in his country and the requirements to enter the school... and my friend stopped him and said, "You very handsome leh. Are all the guys in your school so handsome one?"

He stun. We stun also! Haha quite funny.

New element for periodic table

Scientists around the world are celebrating the latest entry to the periodic table.
It has taken more than a decade for element 112, the biggest and heaviest atom yet, to be officially recognised.
Now the scientific world is eager to find out who will have the honour of having the newest element named after them.
John Kalman, a senior lecturer in chemistry at Sydney's University of Technology, says the periodic table can now be redrawn with an extra name.
"So the joint working party has now accepted the proof that this element does exist and now people have the opportunity to actually name it," he said.
He says it has taken a decade for a scientific team based in Germany to get element 112 approved by authorities.
"They first detected this element in the late 1990s and it's only now that sufficient evidence has been accumulated by repeating experiments and so on, and doing new experiments, that it's become totally convincing," he said.
This man-made element muscles in at 227 times the atomic weight of hydrogen, making it the heaviest addition to the periodic table.
Dr Michael Hotchkis, a nuclear scientist with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) says the advanced technology used to make element 112 is of real practical interest.
"We use accelerators at ANSTO for the detection of signatures of nuclear activities," he said.
"We use accelerators as dating tools for geology and environmental sciences and it's using technology which is not so far removed from the technology that's used for the discovery of these new elements."
Dr Hotchkis suggests the discoverers delve deep for name inspiration.
"I would like to nominate the ancient Greek philosopher, Empepedocles," he said.
"He suggested fire, water, earth, and air, but it was the beginnings of science as we know it now, and the beginnings of chemistry of understanding the constituents of matter.
"In the last few years, with the discovery of 10 or 12 elements since the 1940s, the people and places have already been acknowledged; for example, Einsteinium, Californium, Darmstadtium, so maybe we could look further back to ancient Greece."
Scientists will have to wait until the end of the year to find out who has been bestowed the honour of ending up on the wall chart of every science classroom.
And as the song goes, who knows when more elements will be uncovered?
"These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard; and there may be many others, but they haven't been discovered."

Singapore Kindness Month 2009

One of the highlights of the programme is a series of Flash Mob activities. The aim of these flash mob activities is to remind Singaporeans that they can engage in simple acts of kindness everyday.

Heartware will be collaborating with SKM to engage a group of 300 volunteers to participate in the flash mob activities held over 4 Saturdays in April.

WHAT WILL VOLUNTEERS DO?
Volunteers will be part of the flash mob activities, which will take place at different locations each week. These acts will catch members of public by surprise at familiar locations such as hawker centres, fast food restaurants, shopping centres, buses, MRT trains and train stations. The 300 volunteers will be led by leaders to perform and accomplish the acts of kindness.

Some of the actions volunteers will be performing include:
1. Saying “Hello” and greeting passers-by
2. Giving up seats to other passengers
3. Encouraging people to keep to the left on escalators
4. Encouraging passengers (on bus or MRT) to move in
Volunteers are also invited to the official launch at IMM on 4th April after 6pm.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR…
We are looking for 300 volunteers who are:
• Age 15 years and above
• Energetic, confident and fun-loving
• Able to commit from 1pm – 7pm on any of the Saturdays or all Saturdays

We are also looking for 15-20 leaders who are:
• Age 17 years and above
• Energetic, confident and fun-loving
• Preferably with past leadership experience with Heartware
• Able to commit for a training session on 28th March (tentative)
• Able to commit from 1pm – 7pm on any of the Saturdays or all Saturdays

BENEFITS
• Interact with the public and develop confidence in public speaking
• Learn the value and importance of nurturing a gracious society
• MAKE A DIFFERENCE to the community
• Gain a minimum of 6 hours

Interested volunteers can sign up for the activity “Singapore Kindness Month” on Youth Bank (www.bank4u.org). Application closes on 24th March 2009 (Tuesday).

Hey guys,
Our Reach activity is confirmed on 25 April (Saturday). It's a Mother's Day celebration event at St. Hilda's Community Service centre, from 3-5 pm. We'll most probably be usherer and befriend the old folks there. Then if there's any wheel-chair bound people who's maids are not free to bring them down, we'll have to bring them down from their house lah. Basically that,s the whole thing, but the events haven't been finalised yet. And i'll take it that everyone is participating (including ben). Haha.

The Arts Department is planning to do our bit for the community this yr by setting up a stall (hopefully) at the Tanglin flea market later in April. All proceeds will go to the SCAS, and in the process, we're hoping to also encourage the spirit of recycling!

Having said that, it'd be great if you guys could contribute some items to our stall (:. We're looking at second hand items that are still in good condition - clothes, bags, shoes, books, games, electronic items - and most importantly, NON-BULKY! (Definition of non-bulky: anything that you can take along with you to school even if you're coming by bus/mrt)

The collection for these items will be during your respective COMMON LUNCHES this coming Thursday (19/2) at the canteen.
